On April 26, 2011 What's New in Data Center Technologies was the focus of the C-MUG presentations.
Dr. Pete Welcher (CCIE #1773 and CCSI #94014) discussed technologies that the network and datacenter engineer may not be familiar with including:
- Fiber Channel (FC) / SAN
- Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
Pete's goal for his talk was to provide enough "foreign language" training to improve communication between network engineers and SAN engineers, and help prepare them for when FCoE starts to show up in their datacenter.
In addition to Pete's presentation, Shannon McMackin from Cisco Systems provided an update on the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS). The UCS data center platform unites computing, network, storage access, and virtualization into one system. Some of the topics Shannon covered included:
- UCS core features and benefits (or what is a UCS and why would I want one?)
- Brief overview of UCS hardware
- Using UCS in the Data Center (UCS and Nexus and VMware roles)
